Kubuntu: how to burn CDs in Linux without cdrtools
Use cdrskin, a drop-in replacement to cdrtools.
I read trouble with cdrecord? try cdrskin on ubuntuforums.org, and downloaded & installed it (the standard ./configure && make && sudo checkinstall dance).
It only worked when I used dev=/dev/hda instead of dev=ATA:0,0,0 to signify my cd-writer.
But it worked! Two months after I wrote Cannot burn cds in Linux.
