Survived a failed power supply

I walked downstairs Saturday morning and did not hear my computer. "Is the power out?" I thought to myself, since saying it out loud when no one else was there would have been weird.

Then I saw that the power was indeed in, or on, depending on your point of view, and realized that my computer was silent for another reason. I fervently hoped that it was a power supply, because that was less work to replace than the entire motherboard.

Stopped at a local computer store, asked a few questions, bought a power supply of the same brand as my case, and later installed it, cutting all of the carefully-placed zip ties, and pulling out two extra power connectors. Seems the manufacturer's employees had been so zealous about routing the cords out of the main airflow that they required some extra length.

I noticed something else: the power supply brand was not the computer case brand, even though the case's manual clearly stated that it used the house brand.

Some investigation is in my future.
