The most disturbing scifi I've read in a year

Why in the world did i read M.J. Engh's "Arslan" (ISBN: 0-87795-884-X) after reading the preview on Fictionwise?

The NY Times' review quoted on the dust jacket says it all.

Engh creates a truly shocking situation, introduces a monstrous character, and then refuses to satisfy any of the emotions he has aroused... Engh's performance is as perversely flawless as Arslan's.

A truly chilling, disquieting book. I began identifying with one the main characters, the character you are supposed to identify and sympathasize with, and then I steadily lost my respect for him. And for almost all the characters in the book.

For being who they were.
