Comcast strikes (out) again

What is it with Comcast? Do they bill some arch-enemy for the calls their lowly customers make? Is that why they can't update their phone numbers?

This FAQ entry says:

I lost my user name and password. What should I do? If you have lost or misplaced your new user name, please call a Comcast Support Specialist at 1-888-675-1150.

I called, the nice lady stopped at the first four digits of my account number, and asked "Is this a Comcast phone account?" Uh, no, it's an internet service account. (Yes, I did ignore the disembodied voice talking about paying your phone bill, but that voice only gave another number for other billing questions. I don't got a billing question, I got a tech support question.)

She gave me 866/253-4842. They answered on the first ring (possibly a world record), took my name, address, last four SSN digits (not even sure that's legal, but many moons ago I was dumb enough to give it to them), and put me through to tech support.

Tech support picks up after a few minutes, and proceeds to ask the same personal info that the initial employee asked. Come on, guys!

Anyway, the tech support rep did reset my account, telling me I actually had an entirely new username (gee, Comcast never told me that), and reset my password.

Now everything works well - for an e-mail account that I'll never use...
